Resilience is an inner strength that helps you respond to the pressures and demands of daily life.
Resilience
Overview
Resilience is the ability to cope through difficult times, stress, grief and loss. It doesn’t mean you don’t feel sad or hurt when bad things happen — it means you bounce back from life’s challenges through self-compassion and support. People who are resilient tend to have a positive outlook. When setbacks happen, they work their way through them with patience, acceptance and by asking others for help, if needed.
Boost Your Resilience
Resilience is a skill that anyone can hone with practice. If you don’t have it now, you can develop it with these shifts in perception and behavior:
- Practice positive self-talk: Give yourself credit for the good things you do every day. If you make a mistake, have self-compassion and try again with the lessons you’ve learned.
- Go with the flow: Understand that the world, people, relationships — all things in life — are constantly changing.
- Build connections: Invest your time in healthy relationships, be good to others and reach out for support when you need it.
- See the big picture: In bad times, remind yourself that this, too, shall pass.
- Reflect on experience: Remember how you dealt with past problems. How can you apply those lessons to what’s happening now?
- Take care of yourself: The whole you is mental, physical, financial and emotional. Prioritize your well-being and you’ll be happier, healthier and better prepared for what life brings.
